Meet Our Therapists: Courtney Shiflet

Introducing our newest therapist, Courtney Shiflet, M.S., CF-SLP! Courtney is a graduate of Samford University and is completing her Clinical Fellowship here at SCS. We are so excited to have you, Courtney!

Tell us about your family.

I met my husband at Samford and we got married in August of 2023! I am from Dallas, Texas and the majority of my family is there. I have a younger sister and a younger brother. We love to travel with family and visit Dallas to see everyone!

Do you have any hobbies or interests?

I love being outside so I enjoy hiking and paddleboarding! I also love taking road trips with friends to different parts of the US.

Favorite Birmingham restaurant?

I love Italian food so I would say Bettola!

Where did you go to school?

I went to Samford for my undergraduate and graduate degrees!

What made you want to be an SLP?

I attended a summer camp for individuals with disabilities when I was a teenager. This sparked my interest in working with this population and I started to look into different therapy careers. I had the opportunity to shadow an SLP my senior year of high school and this convinced me to pursue this career.

What's your favorite aspect of being an SLP?

I enjoy the variety of kids I get to work with as an SLP. It is a joy to use each child’s unique interests and passions in therapy sessions to help them reach goals.

What are your favorite resources for learning more about speech and language?

My favorite resource is probably other SLPs. I think learning from other therapist’s experiences is so helpful as a new SLP and they can often help point me to other helpful resources! I also love following Instagram accounts such as @emilydiazslp and @shelbytheslp for therapy ideas.

What's the one thing you wish parents knew about speech and language?

I wish more parents knew how complex the development of speech and language is but how simple it can be to positively impact it for your child. One of the most impactful things you can do as a parent for language development is read to your child each day.
