We are thrilled to be gaining yet another wonderful new clinician, Caroline Thomas! Caroline will be completing her Clinical Fellowship with Steel City Speech. We are so excited to have you, Caroline!

Tell us about your family.

My husband and I met in college and got married this June! He is currently completing his OMFS residency at UAB, and we are happy to begin growing our roots here in Birmingham! My parents live in Raleigh, NC, and my older brother and sister-in-law live in Baltimore, MD.

Do you have any hobbies or interests?

My hobbies include playing pickleball and tennis, needlepointing (still learning), and spending time with friends/family.

Favorite Birmingham restaurant?

This is such a tough question! If I had to choose just one, I would say Bamboo on 2nd .

Where did you go to school?

I went to Centre College for undergraduate where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Neuroscience, then I earned my master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology at The University of Alabama. Roll Tide!!

What made you want to be an SLP?

During my grandmother’s emergency brain surgery recovery, I connected with her SLP in the inpatient setting. I watched my grandmother make a full recovery with the help of her rehab team, especially her SLP! This experience encouraged me to explore this wonderful field further. I found my passion of serving the pediatric population in graduate school, and I am eager to help others effectively communicate their want/needs, ideas, emotions, and thoughts!

What's your favorite aspect of being an SLP? 

I love building relationships with my clients and their families!

What are your favorite resources for learning more about speech and language?

My favorite “speech influencers” are @grahamspeechtherapy and @adventuresinspeechpathology! I also stay up to date on evidence-based research using ASHA’s website, textbooks from graduate school, and consulting other highly qualified SLPs.

What's the one thing you wish parents knew about speech and language?

We are a team! Goals can be met faster with lots of practice not only during speech sessions, but in everyday interactions at home!
